James Lindsay (New Discourses) calls Wokism a cult religion and contends that its founding apostle is early 19th century German philosopher, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831). It’s Hegel’s utopian idealism that influenced Karl Marx and all of the leftist ideological offshoots since. What we will look at today is how Hegelianism is antichrist in nature, and see a clear trajectory from Hegel to Marx to Wokism. This post is the latest in my occassional forays into the dark labyrinth of radical leftism to expose these cancerous ideologies that ultimately destroy everything they touch.
As Christians, we are called to expose evil ideologies wherever we find them.
11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. (Eph.5:11 NIV)
However, let me be clear. This is NOT directed at the people who may either knowingly or unknowingly embrace these ideologies. I am called to love them. Hopefully, I can do my small part to shine the light of truth on this darkness so they can find true freedom in Christ.
Most who embrace wokism are caring people. It’s just that their sense of morality has been dangerously manipulated.
When we investigate the roots of the current woke movement, we must consider that its apparent progenitor, Hegel, wanted to create a folk religion for the German people that would replace Christianity. Hegel was a dedicated historicist, believing that history was on a pre-determined path toward some perfect utopian world. Hence, his metaphysical philosophy should be considered antichrist, by definition (“anti” can also mean “instead of”). Certainly, we were warned by John that many antichrists would come.
18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18 NIV)
But before we move on, I want to make an interesting observation. Because of the sudden onslaught of the radical left’s woke ideology in the mainstream, we now have interesting alliances forming between atheists (like Lindsay), libertarians, traditional liberals, conservatives, and evangelical Christians, all pushing back against this societal cancer.
For instance, Lindsay has been interviewed a few times on Allie Stuckey’s “Relatable.” Allie is an evangelical Christian. You see one of those interviews here:
I will also add that James Lindsay is a great resource if you want to do a deep dive into understanding the insane ideas of the radical left on his New Discourses website.
According to Lindsay, if we want to understand the “operating system” of the radical left, we must understand Hegel’s Dialectical Method. It’s how we will understand the “faith system” of Marxism, neo-Marxism (cultural Marxism), Postmodernism, Identity Politics, Social Justice Critical theories, Queer theories, and Wokeness. Here’s basically how the Hegelian Dialectic Method works:
Thesis: You have an idea (or current system).
Antithesis: You challenge it and find contradictions (deconstruction).
Synthesis: By contemplating both the thesis and antithesis in the right way, you end up with a broader and greater total.
In theory, this all sounds good, and it is foundational to Western progressivism, but we should also understand that Hegel’s ultimate goal was to create a utopian world without God (the world system itself ultimately becomes a self-actualized god). Ironically, it only shows that when people reject God they will just invent their own.
One of Hegel’s philosophical offsprings, Karl Marx, took took Hegel’s metaphysical dialectical method and turned it into dialectical materialism. Marx used it to deconstruct capitalism and class (see my post, “Deconstructing the Communist Manifesto“). You could say that Hegel was the metaphysical engine and Marx was the activist engine of all leftist ideologies.
After Marx, the cultural Marxists make it about race and gender instead of economics. Postmodernism is about the deconstruction of objective truth and reason (Enlightenment modernity is thesis; deconstruction is antithesis).
These theories are not only critical but pessimistic in nature. While they inherit their methodology from Hegel, the current radical left doesn’t seem to have any interest in the positive synthesis, only the destruction of Western culture.
Here’s a non-exhaustive “biblical” geneology of the woke religion: Hegel (1770-1831) begot Feuerbach (1804-1872), who begot Marx (1818-1883), who begot Lenin (1870-1924)and later Mao Zedong (1893-1976). Gramsci (1891-1937) departed from economic Marxism and birthed cultural Marxism (neo-Marxism). From Gramsci, the Frankfurt School birthed the Critical Theories with philosophers like Marcuse (1898-1979), Adorno (1903-1969), and Horkheimer (1895-1973), who begot Postmodernism, which include the French deconstructionists like Derrida (1930-2004), Faucoult (1926-1984), and Lyotard (1924-1998). In the 1950-60s, Marcuse begot our modern social justice movement, with Bell (1930-2011), along with Krenshaw, Delgado, DiAngelo, and Kendi (all still living) who are the high priests of woke.
I will look at some of these neo-marxist theories in future posts that I only mentioned in passing here. And some of them are hopelessly convoluted and almost Gnostic in nature. Hopefully, I can unravel it enought to help us understand these insanely hypocritical and intolerant policies of the left that have been forced on us, like Marcuse’s “repressive tolerance” (which we’re experiencing every day from the MSM and Big Tech!)
If you would like to take a deep dive into this Hegelian trajectory, you can watch/listen to this podcast by James Lindsay titled, “Hegel, Wokeness, and the Dialectical Faith of Leftism.” It’s almost four hours long, but fascinating, and it will give you a thorough understanding of the operating system of the radical left.
Wokism is a virtue-signaling religious cult. It’s truly Orwellian. It redefines terms like “social justice” to disguise its vitriolic anti-white bigotry. It’s a religion without atonement, the very opposite of Christianity. For instance, instead of being forgiven for past sins, you’re canceled for any “un-woke” thing you’ve ever done in your past! It’s a cultural bully that foments fear, hatred and division instead of love and unity. It has its own woke scripture and high priests (mentioned above), and its dogma cannot be questioned by its brainwashed sheeple.
Here’s a Timcast video showing a Woke altar call and how they see it as a cult.
