For Father’s Day I want to play a spontaneous song by Upper Room that’s more like a meditation, or more accurately, an encounter with our heavenly Father’s love. It’s not a song you sing to, it’s a song you open your heart to. You open your heart to the Father’s heart for you. I’ve included a few of the spontaneous lyrics and Scripture to go with them for your edification.
So much has been taught over the centuries about God that actually maligns the Father, which is why I started this blog in the first place. I want to set the record straight and challenge this orphan-hearted Adamic mindset that hides from God behind the fig leaves of religion (or rejection of Him entirely) and continues to paint Him with the Serpent’s brush. He’s not an angry, vengeful, cosmic child abuser, or some pagan deity that needs to be appeased, as some have portrayed Him.
Yes, He does get angry, but it’s with injustice, like a good father when He sees His beloved children being abused and held captive by lies. This is why He sent, of Himself, the Son to rescue us (John 1:18). Because, when we look at Jesus, we see the Father’s true reflection. And whatever is not like Jesus is not like our heavenly Father…no matter who said it.
The following (with quotation marks) are lyrics taken from the spontaneous song followed by Scripture. There’s much more to the song that you should listen to, but this will be a good start.
(Lyrics) “Don’t you know? I formed you in your mother’s womb because I wanted you.
They had nothing to do with that decision… You are my decision.”
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart… (Jer.1:5a)
13 For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them. (Psalm 139:13-16 NASB)
“So tell me.. Why have you been striving? You are my decision.
Here comes my love,
Here comes my love,
Here comes my love…”
3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. (Jer.31:3 NIV)
26 And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” (John 17:26 NKJV)
“There goes the weight.
There goes that heavy thing that’s been sitting in your soul.
Just give me that,
I’ll give you Me.
I love you. I love you. I love you…
You’re my baby.
I love you. I love you. I love you.”
28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matt.11:28-30 MSG)
“From a father to a son…from a father to a daughter…let me pour my love on you.
I’ll protect you, I’ll defend you…
I’ve heard every word they’ve said.
I’ve heard every word they’ve accused you of.
I’ve heard it, too.
But I love you.
I want you to know those are my words.”
7 Lord, you are my secret hiding place,
protecting me from these troubles,
surrounding me with songs of gladness!
Your joyous shouts of rescue release my breakthrough. (Psalm 32:7 TPT)
“I see you pure…
You are My beloved and I am well-pleased.”
2 When I look at you,
I see how you have taken my fruit and tasted my word.
Your life has become clean and pure,
like a lamb washed and newly shorn.
You now show grace and balance with truth on display. (Songs 4:2 TPT)
Here’s the song. I encourage you to take some time away from the busyness of your life, put on some earbuds, and don’t just listen but soak in the words. Let them bless your heart.
You are SO loved.
