For The Sake Of The World

Since we’ve been talking about Jesus Christ, Savior of the World, I thought it would be appropriate to post this classic song from Bethel Music from their album by the same title released in 2012.

As we have seen in the series, we’re told to love the people of the world, the planet, creation, but not love the counterfeit construct that has overlaid itself on God’s good world. In other words, we’re to be “in this world but not of it.” (John 17:15).

The important message of this song is not just another call to go out and “evangelize.” It’s about what makes us effective for reaching the world for Christ, which is the fire and passion that comes from surrendering everything to Him.

And I don’t mean surrender in the traditional religious, legalistic sense that only produces a judgmental and accusatory version of “witnessing” that does nothing more than insult people and alienate them further from God.

As I said in my book, Sonshift, what mitigates against our total surrender is when we think we still have something to protect (see my post discussing this chapter here). Like Adam and Eve, we hide from God (even behind “fig leaf” religion) because being in actual intimate relationship with Him requires exposure and vulnerability. And we won’t do this as long we’ve  painted God’s face with the accuser’s brush, having the wrong kind of fear, and thinking He’ll punish us instead of love all the brokenness out of us.

But when we do trust God completely, giving it all for Him, we begin to feel His fire burning like a flame for all to see, and the chorus of this song becomes a passionate prayer:

For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me
Light a flame in my soul for every eye to see
For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me.

And when Jesus’ life becomes our life (Gal.2:20), people begin to see Jesus in us. And that’s the whole point! Here’s the video with lyrics included below. Let’s make this our anthem prayer for the glory of God. Blessings.

For The Sake of The World
By Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Joel Taylor
© 2012 Bethel Music Publishing

I’m laying down my life
I’m giving up control
I’m never looking back
I surrender all
I’m living for Your glory on the earth

This passion in my heart
This stirring in my soul
To see the nations bow
For all the world to know
I’m living for Your glory on the earth

For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me
Light a flame in my soul for every eye to see
For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me

For every knee to bow down
For every heart to believe
For every voice to cry out
Burn like a fire in me

For every tongue to confess
You alone are the King
You are the hope of the earth
Burn like a fire in me
