Enthusiasm: the mystery of God in us!

enthusiasmEnthusiasm is a heart word. When you’re enthusiastic, you’re living from the heart…you’re touching God! It’s becoming like a little child, which is the way of heaven. It’s when you’re most fully alive.

If you understand Greek you probably vaguely hear the word for God (theos) in the word. It’s actually derived from the Greek word ενθουσιασμός (enthousiasmos) which basically means “divine inspiration.” According to the Online Etymology Dictionary:

“it originally came from the word enthousiazein, which meantbe inspired or possessed by a god, be rapt, be in ecstasy,” from entheos “divinely inspired, possessed by a god” from en “in”  + theos “god” .”

Enthusiasm comes from God, and God’s very being is love, so when we have enthusiasm we’re resonating with God, with Love, at the deepest part of who we are. We’re touching something sacred within us, revealing part of the mystery of why we are.

This great mystery isn’t something we cannot know, for mystery is something we progressively do know, and will know even more so! As Richard Rohr says about mystery in his latest book, The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation:

“Remember, mystery isn’t something that you cannot understand—it is something that you can endlessly understand! There’s no point at which you can say, “I’ve got it.” Always and forever, mystery gets you!” (Kindle loc. 348)

We’re beholding something divine...going from glory to glory! (2 Cor.3:18).

So let’s live in this mystery of enthusiasm…with flaming hearts filled with passion in the full embrace of the Circle of Love where our life is “hidden with Christ in God” (Col.3:3).

27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Col.1:27 NIV – emphasis mine)

To help us take this journey of the heart, I’m re-posting a song by United Pursuit titled, “Let It Happen” (by Andrea Marie Reagan) from their Simple Gospel album. I found this lyric video version of the song (provided by Kristin Bates). Let’s learn the way of the heart, living like a little child, from the heart to the head….letting go of all our “head” issues, letting God entheos us.

Let it happen. Be alive.

Thanks Mel for this article. Moreso, I thank you for the various song clips you post. Since your introduction of WorshipMob last Sunday, I have been hooked. Thank you so much! God bless

    • Mel Wild says:

You’re welcome, AfroScot. I’m glad you are blessed by the clips. A lot of the songs I put here are songs that I include in my “soaking worship” or are songs that have ministered to me in the past.

  2. Live this thought and that verse. So let’s live in this mystery of enthusiasm…with flaming hearts filled with passion in the full embrace of the Circle of Love where our life is “hidden with Christ in God” (Col.3:3). Oh, to live daily in that mystery of enthusiasm and passion for Christ.

  3. Cindy Powell says:

“So let’s live in this mystery of enthusiasm…” Yes please! This is so where I’ve been camping out lately – I’m longing to stay in a place of perpetual wonder. I love the breakdown of the word enthusiasm itself – I never knew that but it makes such perfect sense! Such a good word – in more ways than one! 😊

    • Mel Wild says:

God meets us in the way He designed us to respond. In the things we’re most passionate about. Enthusiasm tells us something about ourselves and how we were made. It’s the power of love touching our hearts and making us feel fully alive. Pretty awesome!
Blessings to you, Cindy, as you stay in the wonder! 🙂
