We need re-minding so we can re-present the goodness of God

Remind_represent_Godisgood1What is the purpose of renewing our minds? According to Paul, the ultimate purpose is to prove to the world that God’s will for them is good, perfect, and acceptable.

Here’s what he said…

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”  (Rom.12:2)

You see, the problem is that most people don’t see the God of the Bible as He really is. They believe in a mythical god.

They see Him as angry, vindictive, distant and only loving with conditions. Their misguided view of sovereignty makes Him the author (or permitter) of sickness, disease, sin and evil. In their minds, He’s an absentee, indifferent and hard-to-please Father who won’t protect you. How could a parent be any worse than that?

They make Him in their own image, invented from their own earthly experience.

So they believe a myth.

Are you believing a god myth?

So, how do we see God’s intentions for us rightly? Answer: we need to be re-minded.

Re-mind: a mind is the set of cognitive faculties that enables consciousness, perception, thinking, judgment, and memory. To re-mind, then, is to re-enable our consciousness or perception, thinking.

We need our conscious perception, our thinking, our judgment, re-enabled, re-done, overhauled, so we can see God rightly…where we begin to think and believe like Jesus (Eph.4:14-15).

As Graham Cooke would say, we need to “have another thought”…about God and about ourselves.

We need to see how Jesus described our heavenly Father, like in the story of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son (Lk.15:1-32)…or the treasure in the field and the pearl of great price (Mt.13:44-46). All of these are all describing how this Father feels about YOU.

God is love (1 Jn.4:8). Which means, all the attributes of love described in 1 Cor.13:4-8 describe what God is really like. Just read this out loud to yourself and ponder…

“GOD is patient and kind. GOD does not envy, is not boastful or proud or rude. GOD does not demand His own way. GOD is not irritable, and GOD keeps no record of being wronged. GOD does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. GOD never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.  GOD never fails.”

Is this the God you know? If not, you only know a mythical god of religion, invented in the minds of man, not the real God.

The reason Jesus was so compelling to the people, and drew such crowds is because when they saw Him they saw what God was really like. When He fed the multitudes, healed their sick, raised their children back to life, when He set them free from Satan’s bondages, when He showed mercy to those who deserved judgment, they saw our heavenly Father’s intention for them. They saw the real-life God, not the religious mythical one of their invention.

Jesus said, if you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father (Jn.14:7, 9), then He sent us to go about being able to say the same thing (Jn.20:21).

To “do likewise” is to re-present the goodness of God.

Re-present: to bring or introduce into the presence of someone especially of superior rank or status, to introduce socially. So, we re-present God to the world when we show Him as He actually is instead of the god of their imaginations.

Beloved, this is our mission. The why to what we do. If our prayer, our study, our worship, our pursuit of God, doesn’t bring us to this goal, then we have missed our purpose here.

We are to re-mind our thinking so we can re-present this Author of every good gift (Jas.1:17), showing that what He wants is actually the best, most perfect and totally acceptable thing we all would ever want for ourselves.

I will end with a Bill Johnson quote, “Everybody wants a king like Jesus. If we represent him well, they’ll want His body too.”

  1. Well you’ve done again was thinking something similar just before I read your blog post. Was thinking that we need to get to know the character of who God really is. Because it is when we discover his real character that intimacy with Him n others grow. That is when we change n start to show the true God to the world. Wow, love it when God speaks n confirms like that.
